Count portions before tiers
It is tempting to begin with a picture of a three-tier cake and work backwards. A more helpful first question is how many people you want to serve. Then consider when they will eat it: as part of dessert, alongside an evening buffet or wrapped to take home.
Your daytime and evening guest counts may be different. You may also have another dessert planned. Tell me those details when you enquire, even if the numbers are approximate. They help us choose an appropriate amount of cake instead of relying on the number of tiers alone.
The size of each tier matters
Two cakes with the same number of tiers can serve different numbers of guests. Tier dimensions and the way portions are cut affect the final count. A photograph gives a sense of proportion, but it cannot tell you everything about how much cake there is.
My Cakes & Pricing page lists starting portion ranges alongside the cake sizes. Use those as a first guide, then we can discuss your own guest numbers and serving plans. Starting prices are for fully iced cakes without decoration; flowers, other details and delivery are quoted separately.
Balance height with your setting
A taller cake can make a striking centrepiece in a large room, while a smaller design may feel just right on an intimate cake table. Neither is automatically the better choice. The stand, backdrop and decoration all contribute to how substantial the display feels.
If you want more height than your portion count needs, ask about whether dummy tiers would suit the design. If you need more portions than you want on display, we can discuss the possibility of additional cake served from behind the scenes. These are design options to consider together, rather than a fixed rule.
Share the practical details
The most useful starting information is your date, venue, approximate guest count and how you expect the cake to be served. If a particular silhouette matters to you, include the photograph and explain what you like about it.
We can refine the details as your plans become clearer. You do not need to settle every tier before getting in touch, and you do not need to order extra cake simply to match an inspiration image. The goal is a design that looks right and gives you the portions you actually want.
